The “Impossible” Burger

By now, you may have heard of a brand new veggie burger that has just been launched in a New York restaurant called The Impossible Burger. What’s impossible about it, you ask? Well, it’s simple – it’s a completely plant based burger that looks, acts and tastes just like a regular beef burger, and get this – it “bleeds” like beef. When it comes to vegetarianism, there’s going to be a big divide about this; people will either be intrigued and rush to try it, or will be horrified at the thought of it. Where do you lie on the scale?

Impossible Foods are the innovative company behind this meat substitute, reportedly investing over $80m in research to develop this ingredient. They describe it as “An insanely good burger, made from insanely good ingredients” Now we’re all for progress in the meat substitute debate, but is this a step too far?

The creators of the Impossible Burger say “It’s important to know where your meat comes from. Caring about how meat gets to our mouths is what led us to create the Impossible Burger in the first place. That’s why our ingredients are simple things you know like wheat, coconut oil, potato protein… along with one you might not know -heme. While super abundant in meat, it’s a basic building block of life on Earth, including plants. It’s the “magic ingredient” that makes our meat look, cook, and taste gloriously meaty.”

While there may be thousands of vegetarians, vegans and meat-reducers rejoicing at the introduction of this meatless burger, the creators believe that it will mainly attract the carnivores of the world, looking for a healthier version of one of their favourite meals.
